OUR HISTORY

Durban Girls Secondary School, initially founded as Mitchell crescent Girls High School and later as Durban Indian Girls’ High School, was established in 1930. The school broke barriers as it became known as the first Indian girls’ high school in South Africa.
Miss Florence Slater was the school’s first principal with an initial enrolment of only 35 girls. The school excelled as the class of 1934 wrote the first National Senior Certificate examination. Despite initial push-back from society, the school continued to grow. Many strong and influential alumnae passed through the institution excelling in medicine, commerce, law and politics- by the likes of political activists Ela Ghandi and Fatima Meer.
Mrs S Poovalingam and Mrs S D Singh, both learners at the school became succeeding principals respectively.
Now known as Durban Girls Secondary School, the school accommodates a diverse selection of girls who continue to excel in their chosen paths. The vicinity encompasses the original school building, which now houses multiple classrooms and the school’s library and is also considered a National Monument.
